Trade association directory gets a refresh

When we first went looking for a comprehensive directory of UK trade associations, we were surprised that one didn’t exist. So we created one.

Our trade association directory has now grown to almost 1,300 entries, covering industry associations and trade bodies from across the UK.

Keeping a resource like this accurate is an ongoing task. Associations merge, close, rebrand, or change their websites. A directory is only valuable if it is up to date.

That’s why we’ve just completed a significant refresh:

  • 83 outdated entries removed
  • 39 new associations added
  • Over 150 updates to names or website addresses

The result is a cleaner, more accurate and more useful resource for anyone researching UK trade associations.

Spotlight: One of the oldest trade associations

Among the new additions is one of the oldest trade associations in the UK, and we’re not quite sure how we missed it previously.

The Drinking Fountain Association was founded in 1859, at a time when contaminated water in the Thames posed serious public health risks.

Its forerunner, the Metropolitan Free Drinking Fountain Association, was formed by MP Samuel Gurney and barrister Edward Thomas Wakefield. Its stated aim was:

“That no fountain be erected or promoted by the Association which shall not be so constructed as to ensure by filters, or other suitable means, the perfect purity and coldness of the water.”

It is a reminder that trade associations have long played a role not just in representing sectors, but in shaping standards, improving public welfare and influencing policy.

The breadth of organisations in the directory, from historic bodies like this to newly formed sector groups, reflects the diversity and depth of UK industry representation.

A landscape that is always evolving

The UK association landscape is complex and constantly evolving. That is why our directory will always be a work in progress.

If you spot an omission, a name change or a website update, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please send any additions or corrections to [email protected] for inclusion in our next update.
